Solar Energy Capture
PowerPanel’s PVT (Photovoltaic Thermal) is a dual decarbonization solution Capture 84% of the available solar energy and convert it into hot water and electricityPowerPanel’s PVT
PowerPanel’s Made in America dual decarbonization solution can do more than traditional PV-only solutions. Our patented PVT modules deliver electricity, just like PV. But for every unit of electrical energy, we are adding four units of thermal energy.
Below we introduce these topics:
- How it works
- Energy Utilization
- Key Benefits – When to choose PowerPanel PVT
How it Works
We maximize the heat absorption through a robust glass plate in front of the PV cells and an absorber plate behind them. We then channel that heat away through a cascading water stream and capture it in the Thermal Tank. Our EPP-foam insulated module ensures a high degree of efficiency even in colder climates. The cooling of the PV cells ensures optimized performance for electrical output generation.
The individual modules are combined into arrays ranging from 8 to 20 modules to meet the client’s hot water needs. The arrays can be mounted on slanted roofs or on our robust racking which can be placed on flat roofs or on the ground (see our specification sheet for loads).
We have tested our assemblies for hurricane strength impacts and can ensure they withstand windspeeds up to 200 miles. The Thermal Tanks can be placed immediately under the array or in other locations in or near the building.
Additional features: Our modules are designed from corrosion-free materials for longevity, have proven to be extremely resilient to damage (see the video of driving a truck over the module without noticeable damage), and our drain-back design ensures that no water remains in the system during non-operation, preventing freeze damage. A completely snow-covered module can be reactivated in service mode within a few minutes by melting the snow with the stored warm water from the Thermal Tank.
Energy Utilization
The primary purpose of our PowerPanel PVT solution is to capture solar energy, which is captured in the Thermal Tank to power domestic hot water systems. The additional electrical energy is utilized to power the system, additional components (see Heat Pump section), or provide surplus electricity. See PowerPanel page for specs and details.
Key Benefits – When to Choose PowerPanel PVT
PowerPanel’s innovative approach integrates photovoltaic and solar thermal technologies into a hybrid PVT system, paired with advanced thermal storage tanks, to achieve high efficiency and dual energy outputs (electricity and heat).
High Efficiency: Capture 84% of available solar energy efficiently in a smaller footprint vs. combining traditional PV and separate solar water heater systems.
Dual Decarbonization: Reduces emissions related to both, electricity and hot water generation, doubling the environmental impact.
Increased Grid-Independence: In areas with volatile power grids, ensure you have a reliable hot water supply to meet your customer’s needs and expectations (e.g., hospitality, laundry, hospitals, multi-family residential)
