Waste Energy (Re)Capture - Stop Wasting Energy
Capture energy you already paid for instead of discharging it.How it works
Many existing energy-related systems do not make full use of the available thermal energy.
An air conditioning unit draws heat out of a space/building and “discharges” that heat into the environment. By adding a “desuperheater” into the refrigerant cycle, we can reclaim a substantial portion of that “already paid for” energy and make it available via our Thermal Tank as an energy source for hot water.
Hot water that is being used, for example, in laundry operations or various stages of the brewing process, is often discharged after a single use cycle. We can recapture some of the thermal energy to reduce the need to make “more hot water” for future uses.
Desuperheaters
Many commercial-grade AC units (e.g. rooftop units) can be equipped with OEM or aftermarket “desuperheaters”. This system component is installed in the high temperature loop of the refrigerant cycle after pressurized and “superheated” refrigerant vapor leaves the compressor. Instead of dissipating this “waste” heat into the environment via the condenser, it is transferred to the Thermal Tank.

Waste Water Heat Recovery Systems (WWHRS):
Various design options exist to reclaim energy from wastewater. The common principle is that a heat exchanger “extracts” the surplus heat from the wastewater and allows for renewed use. One common approach is a shell and tube heat exchanger. Tubes are extended into a “shell” to create a high surface area for interaction of the two liquids while preventing them from mixing. As the hot liquid “swirls” around the tubes, the fluid in the tubes is heated up and can transport the energy away.

Energy Utilization:
The recaptured thermal energy heats up the working fluid in the Thermal Tank. Via a heat exchanger, this energy is utilized to provide hot water for the specific client needs (e.g. showers in a hotel, dishwashing and meal prep in a restaurant, laundry).
Key Benefits – When to Choose Waste Energy (Re)Capture:
Our sales and technical teams work with our clients to determine if waste energy sources are available and can be tapped into. These solutions require engineering support to ensure that the overall system performance, including the systems from which the energy is sourced, can be maintained at desired levels.
The amount of waste heat available may not always match hot water demand. A Waste Energy (Re)Capture solution is typically part of a broader solution involving other energy sources such as solar or ambient energy capture (see relevant sections).
